The International Maxi Association – the international body that guides and represents maxi owners all over the World – makes a welcome return to Capri thanks to the inclusion of the “Regata dei Tre Golfi” in the IMA Mediterranean Maxi Offshore Challenge 2017-2018.
Maxi yachts have been racing off Naples and in Capri waters for more than a decade, says Andrew McIrvine, IMA Secretary General.
“The last time the IMA was in Capri was in 2014 – that year the Croation maxi Esimit Europa 2 was the overall winner among the maxis on both the Volcano Race (the offshore race that year acted as a feeder race from Gaeta to Capri) and the Capri series. “What started as a small mainly social gathering of maxi owners 36 years ago has developed into an organisation with the authority from World Sailing to be the organiser of World Championships and management of maxi sailing in general. Our major responsibility must be to encourage high standards of race management, safety and measurement for both inshore and offshore events. Our overall goal is to encourage greater participation in maxi racing. We will only endorse events that are held to these high standards, and the Regata dei Tre Golfi – and the Rolex Capri Sailing Week as a whole – certainly achieves those standards. ”
Rolex Capri Sailing Week 2018 has brought 3 of the major Italian yacht clubs together – and the IMA is honoured to work with them.
Maxi 72s have already expressed serious interest in joining the Capri event. Caol Ila R is planning to race the Tre Golfi, while Jethou and Cannonball are likely to enter the Capri week.
Now comprising the 5 Mediterranean’ most prestigious offshore races – the Rolex Middle Sea Race, the 151 Miglia, the Giraglia offshore, the Palermo to Montecarlo race and, last but not least, the Regata dei Tre Golfi, since 2015 the IMA Mediterranean Maxi Offshore Challenge has been aiming to promote and boost Maxi yacht competition offshore in the Mediterranean Sea.
Winner of the 2018 IMA Mediterranean Maxi Offshore Challenge will be the maxi yacht scoring the best results across 3 of the above 5 events. The prize will be presented to the winner at the International Maxi Association’s Annual Dinner during the 2018 Maxi
